epic film from 1952: “le plaisir” by max ophuls

based on three short stories by legendary french writer guy de maupassant, the criterion collection version of this film from 1952 comes highly recommended complete with a fascinating intro by director todd haynes, who breaks down everything from cinematography to scene relevance and scoops on the story lines. definitely a DVD for a rainy day.


john millei’s ‘woman in a chair’ show at ace gallery…

i’m utterly gobsmacked by this exhibition in my neighborhood right now which basically kick started with the artist’s visit to centre pompidou in paris years ago, and resulted in an impulse postcard purchase of picasso’s ‘portrait de femme (dora maar).’ the image made its way back to california upon millei’s studio wall and voila, years later a wildly impressive series of interpretations conclude the tale. from picasso to millei, and now from me to you. gotta love life when art makes the rounds folks.
