As much a modern day love letter to the city of angels as it is an impressionistic journey into the mindset of six photographers and one solitary filmmaker, LA WOMAN is a 48-hour exhibition that opens today at Oakley’s IN RESIDENCE studio space in Hollywood. Highlighting an innovative emergence of female creatives, the show is essentially a homage to the art of female skateboarding featuring the stars and the scenery of the city where it all began. From the serenity of nature to the gritty backdrops of downtown L.A, think landscapes, liberty and the ladies of the SoCal skate scene. “Its always inspiring seeing women making a mark on a male-dominated sport like skateboarding” says Amber B. Dianda, who not only photographed famed skateboarder (and Oakley-sponsored athlete) Leticia Bufoni, she also curated the show. My personal highlights include Deanna Templeton’s awe-inspiring shot that is a testament to her savvy knack for capturing fleeting moments among the very neighborhoods where it all began, along with Imogene Barron’s luminescent frame of a doe-eyed teen in the backseat of a car (seat belt secured, lip gloss perfectly applied). From the teenage girls that are frequently the focal point to the women behind the lens capturing the shot, LA WOMAN is importantly a candid glimpse into the kinship of sisterhood and a tribute to the cultural players that are ushering skateboarding as an art form into a new frontier.
Friday May 8th – Sunday 10th only, 11am – 8pm.
